BTS’s RM Opens First Solo Exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
Kim Nam-joon — better known to the world as RM of BTS — opened his first solo art exhibition on Friday at Seoul’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), marking a significant step in his evolution from global pop phenomenon to serious cultural figure.
Titled Persona: Between the Lines, the exhibition features 34 original works spanning painting, sculpture, and immersive installation, all created over the past three years while RM completed his mandatory military service.
A Personal Journey Through Art
“Music has always been how I speak to the world,” RM said at the opening press conference. “But art is how I speak to myself. This exhibition is the most honest thing I have ever done.”
The centerpiece installation, titled Nameless, fills an entire gallery with fragments of mirrors, each etched with a word in Korean, English, or Japanese. Visitors walk through a disorienting labyrinth of reflected selves — a meditation on the fractured identity of someone who has been famous since adolescence.
Critical Reception
Critics have responded enthusiastically. The Korea Times called the exhibition “a genuine artistic statement, not a celebrity vanity project.” Artsy described RM’s painting technique as showing “a raw, searching quality reminiscent of early Jean-Michel Basquiat.”
MMCA curator Lee Jiyoung, who collaborated with RM on the show’s concept, said the museum received unprecedented advance ticket reservations — over 140,000 bookings in the first 72 hours after announcement.
The Cultural Context
The exhibition arrives as the Korean Wave continues to reshape global cultural flows. Korean artists, directors, musicians, and now visual artists are commanding international attention at a scale unimaginable a generation ago.
Persona: Between the Lines runs through August 31 at MMCA Seoul. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Arts Education Foundation for Underprivileged Youth.
